Friedrich Gutmann (died April 1944), also known by the first name “Fritz,” was a Dutch banker and art collector. ==Background==
His father, Eugen Gutmann (1840-1925), had founded in 1872 the Dresdner Bank.〔Joachim O. Ronall, “Gutmann, Eugen,” ''Encyclopaedia Judaica'' vol. 7 (Jerusalem, 1974), pp. 988-9.〕 A convert from Judaism,〔Felix Goldmann, ”Converts,” ''Universal Jewish Encyclopedia'' vol. 3 (New York, 1941), p. 345.〕 Eugen Gutmann ran the bank in Berlin for over 40 years, developing it into a major German financial operation with an international reach.〔See newspaper advertisements in ''The Sentinel'' (Chicago), August 1, 1919, p. 14 (in English); and ''Haynt'' (Warsaw), Dec. 23, 1927, p.1 (in Yiddish).〕 During that time, he accumulated many works of art, including a famous Renaissance gold and silver collection.〔Héctor Feliciano, ''The Lost Museum. The Nazi conspiracy to steal the world’s greatest works of art'' (New York: Basic Books, 1995), p. 114.〕 During World War II, the Dresdner Bank, then under Nazi control, traded in looted Nazi gold.〔Gregg J. Rickman, ''Swiss Banks and Jewish Souls'', Transactions Publishers, 1999, pp. 242-4.〕 For example, it transferred via Switzerland $20 million to a Buenos Aires bank account of Joseph Goebbels, which became one of the largest in Germany.〔Jean Ziegler, ''The Swiss, the Gold, and the Dead'', Penguin Books, translated from the German, 1999, p. 159.〕
